Thank you so much for returning to read my musings. I truly appreciate you taking time out of your day to read my blog, view my artwork, and follow me on social media for glimpses into the day-to-day life of an artist.
Being an artist is not all painting and creating. There is also the business side to manage—and taking care of it helps me make space, both in my mind and on my desk.
A September reset
When September arrives, I always feel the need to clear things out and prepare for a new term. It is not that I have not been working throughout the summer—I have. Perhaps it is the child in me remembering the excitement of getting ready for school: a new pencil case, shoes, uniform, and everything else.
Of course, I am not returning to school, college, or university; I am continuing my work in the studio. Even so, my mind is already filling with possibilities and unfinished business:
- developing a new series of work;
- completing the series still in progress; and
- returning to the commissions I have already begun.
One thought leads to another—and before long, all that thinking becomes overthinking.
Pause and begin again
Sometimes I need to pause, take a breath, and start again with a fresh perspective—renewed and ready for the challenge ahead.
A new chapter at Tilted Angel
What will this “new term” bring? I’ll spend one day each week working with Lizzie Williams at her gallery, Tilted Angel, in Boscastle.
Although this will be a new experience, I’m looking forward to meeting people, talking about art, and helping clients choose original pieces to take home. In quieter moments, I’ll continue writing or painting.
A meaningful commission
I’m currently creating an abstract commission inspired by a couple’s love story and life together. Drawing on the details they have shared, I hope the finished piece will resonate with them both.
It is a real privilege to receive such a personal commission, but it also carries great responsibility: to honour their story and create layers of emotion they can experience each day.
I’ll document the creative journey, although I won’t be able to share it until the couple have received the finished piece.
Like all my work, the piece will be built in layers, with each one adding another part of their story. Some details will remain clearly visible; others will appear only as subtle hints or be completely covered. Even when hidden, the couple and I will know that every part of their story is still there.
There is plenty going on, and I’m grateful for all I’m doing—and for everything still to discover. I hope you have a wonderful September, and I’ll catch up with you next month.
